The diamond-like gem functions as the wild in Prism of Gems, and can only land on the top multiplier reel. When it does, the symbols on the reel below it will all split into 2, which creates more ways to win.

Split Symbols feature

Similarly, if a symbol that lands on the horizontal top reel also lands on the vertical reel below it, it also splits into 2 same symbols. This is known as the Split Symbols feature.

Multiplier Reel

The multiplier reel at the top can feature any of the symbols, which are assigned a multiplier starting from 1x.
